In
place of the former World Trade Center in the United States, a new project has taken shape. Instead of another high-rise building, the site now serves as a memorial to those lost in the tragic events of September 11, 2001. The National September 11 Memorial & Museum, opened in 2011, is a powerful tribute to the lives lost on that fateful day. The memorial features twin reflecting pools, each nearly an acre in size, in the footprints of the original Twin Towers. Surrounding the pools are bronze parapets inscribed with the names of the 2,977 victims, including those who died at the nearby Pentagon and on United Airlines Flight 93. The 9/11 Memorial Museum documents the events of September 11, 2001, as well as the World Trade Center’s history and its impact on global affairs. The museum features artifacts, films, and interactive exhibits that bring the history to life. Visitors can see pieces of steel recovered from the Twin Towers, personal items belonging to the victims, and hundreds of photographs and videos. The project was designed by architect Michael Arad and landscape architect Peter Walker, and it serves not only as a solemn tribute but also as a public space for reflection and gathering. The memorial is visited by millions of people each year, from around the world, and has become a symbol of strength, remembrance, and unity.
